Sticks origins date back to 1985 when Sarah Grant, an abstract painter and college art instructor began experimenting with 3-D design. In December of 1991, Better Homes and Gardens featured a story about Sarah and her company "Origin Art Forms" which elicited a large national response and an influx of orders. Sarah incorporated the company as Sticks, Inc. in 1992, and the company has evolved to offer a distinct line of furniture, accessories and object art. Each piece is handcrafted and designed within Sticks award-winning design studio in Des Moines, Iowa by a staff of nearly 150 craft artisans.

Sticks uses two main woods to create each piece of handcrafted furniture. Poplar and Birch woods are often used for the body of the pieces, while Driftwood is used to finish the arms, legs and handles.

The raw wood is transformed into furniture by Sticks' team of master woodworkers. The piece is then sent to the drawing studio where the artwork is sketched onto the furniture. The sketches are then given more character and depth by being wood burned and engraved. The piece is then stained and sanded, at which point it is hand-painted in the paint studio. Once the painting is complete and dry, the piece receives several coats of polyurethane to give it the durability of a hardwood floor.

The painting will not fade. The finishing process should protect against fading. Tables have about five coats of polyurethane; this means that having a glass of ice water or hot coffee will not leave a ring on the table. However, do not allow anything wet to sit for a long time or it will leave a ring (as on any table). To clean use a damp cloth. Never use Pledge or other such item for it will leave a build-up and dull the finish. If a cleaner is needed, use a little dish washing detergent with a soft rag.
